    Derailleur and Shifter Issues

So for a while now I have been having trouble with my rear derailleur coming out of tune as I ride, especially on rougher terrain. The confusing part is that it stops wanting to shift into a higher gear (i.e. chain moving down the rear cogs). So based on my knowledge this would mean that my cables are getting tighter as I ride, and I have to constantly adjust my rear derailleur by loosening the cable a few times every ride. This is confusing because I don't know how my cable could tighten itself as I ride; if anything I would expect it to get looser. More recently I was getting it back in tune after a ride and the thumb shifter started getting really stiff. When i go to shift into 1st or 2nd gear in the rear it takes a great amount of force. I am not sure if the two are related or not, but they are both aggravating. Does anyone have any advice or knowledge on these issues?

    A few things I have checked/tried already,
    1. top and bottom limits on the derailleur
    2. cables ability to move freely through the guides, may need some lubricant, haven't added any in a while
    3. derailleur's ability to move smoothly by working it with my hand

The cable isn't tightening itself during the ride, it's hanging up due to stiction somewhere along the line. This sounds like a classic case where new cables and housing will make everything right again. Cables can feel fine when checking by hand but rear derailleurs are very sensitive to any imperfections.

Thanks for the advice, I had thought that might be the issue. I will look more into that.

If it's a full suspension then check the routing and length as you replace the cables and housing.

As above, I'm lending support to the cable replacement theory.
