I've always done well with lined Shimano and Jagwire housing, o-ring ferrules, and basic cleaning of the bike. I lubed my cables once, 15 or so years ago. That was a mistake; please make note of this.

I've always used white grease on the inner wire, but recently tried silicone spray. I like Jagwire and shimano housing too. Generally have decent life out of the stuff. I change the outers only every couple of years, the inners seem to last longer.

Last time I switched to using brake cable housing- plenty of room for the cable to move in.
I trimmed down the ends a bit to fit shifter caps on since the brake caps had a larger diameter hole. Works great.
