    derailleur

I'm new to the mountain bike world and don't know anything about the mechanics behind shifting and derailleurs. I know that while i'm riding the rear will just change gears on it's own. Is there adjustments available? I know nothing. Time to upgrade or replace? Or is it easy to adjust/possible?

Try starting here and read some of the linked articles there, too...http://sheldonbrown.com/gears.html

ps Your gears won't shift on their own unless you have a Landrider or similar bike shifting system...

Thanks. Lots of info for me to learn there. We'll see where that gets me.
