I just got a 2010 Giant Anthem X3 with a mix of Deore parts for the drive train. Looking at the cranks they look/are shaped like a 2009 set of Deore XT cranks, just painted black with Deore written on the arms and thats it. When I read the model# on the back it says FC M591. But when I do a search for FC M591, I come up with cranks that look nothing like the ones I have on my bike. Also, when I go to Giant's website, their secs say the 2010 X3 comes with Deore XT cranks. Just wondering if these cranks are really XT and just a OEM version or what.
They work fine - great even. I just assumed at first glance I'd have to upgrade to some XT's down the line. But When I look at them, they look exactly like the older XT's. Nothing like the M591's I come up with in a search.
Clearly a mis-print as I'm not aware of any LBS brand bikes that come with XT cranks on a sub $2K bike. They're part of the latest Deore M590 group, the M591 being considered part of their "Trekking" parts. While they share technology with the XT crankset, there are several key differences including solid arms (vs hollow for XT) and chainrings (no CF/Steel center ring like the XT).

Every company's spec chart also has a "subject to change without notice" disclaimer.
Giant may have originally intended to use XT but switched to Deore later because of availability, cost, or it is just a mistake on the web site.
Edit: Typo as the Overview says "- Shimano Deore/SLX shifting with Shimano Deore crankset"
Wow, on the "Overview" page Giant's website says the Anthem x3 comes with "Deore" cranks, but on the "Specifications" page is says Deore XT for the cranks and bottom bracket.
Obviously a typo on their part, but you shouldn't expect anything more than Deore cranks on this level of bike.
WOW, maybe I need to get my eyes checked instead. Missed that.
It probably was a cut/paste type of thing. At the GT dealer I work for, the GT Zaskar Pro 29er (Full XT) had a description that was identical to the Zaskar Exper 29er (the model below).
Well I guess I'll get my chance to upgrade. Went riding today and managed to strip out the drive side crank arm with the pedal. And my coolant res on my audi cracked leaking coolant in the bike shop parking lot. Great day. Now I'm trying to figure out If I want to go with an older LX Hollow Tech II for $89 at Jenson or a set of 09 XT cranks for $225 local at Performance. Wondering if the $135 difference is reall worth it.

I would get the LX cranks. Thats a great deal IMHO.
If you have time to wait Starbike has really good deals on XT cranksets from time to time. I brought a set of SLX (from CRC) than a short time later could have got XT from Starbike for the same price. SLX pop up for $99 from time to time. Keep an eye on the Best Deals section.
A shop might be able to repair the thread in your crank arm. A helicoil might work for a while. I used a lawnmower repair shop once for this type of repair, they were much cheaper than anywhere else in town.

I ordered a set of LX from Jenson, but I'm on the fence about getting the same ones I already have - The Deore M583's. I found them for the same price and I like the fact that they already have steel middle and smaller chainrings, and they look better to me, just a little heavier. I have to make a decision before they ship them out. Found the Deore's in black here: http://www.rememberdelaware.com/p-7...x?gdftrk=gdfV21133_a_7c351_a_7c2550_a_7c78377
The LX I ordered from Jenson. Price is about the same with shipping. What do you guys think?
No warranty on this. I tried. Improper installation and their discount price is still expensive. And I'm just not ready to fork over $200+ on a set of XT's yet. Down the road, I'd like to upgrade the whole drivetrain to the 2x10 SRAM setup, but that's a dream at this point.

The difference was like 91 grams or so. I guess that's a lot. I don't know. I'm thinking maybe I better stay withe older LX. It looks to be a better crank.

Thanx for your input guys. I'll have my M582's by Thursday for $104 shipped. Can't beat that price. Jenson is a lifesaver. I would have rather upgraded to XT but I'm just not at that point. I know I have to get new wheels later, just bought new tires, seat, pedals, and a bike rack. Plus I've done no maint on my roadbike this season yet. I'm kinda tapped out. The LX is the perfect fit for me right now. An upgrade at a great price. I'm just hoping everything will line up correctly and not give me shifting headachs. The reviews were very positive for these cranks. Hope their reputation holds up in my case.
