    New question here. Crankset compatibility?

Hi I have what is probably a dumb question, but I couldnt find anything from a search..

I bent two of the rings on my crankset so I was going to replace the whole thing. Can I get any 9 speed, three gear crankset and swap them or will I run into problems? I know the number of teeth per gear will change the gear ratios and the actual crank lengths will too, but as far as shifting and all that...?

    Thank you for helping!

Nobody can give you exact advice, when we do not know what you are replacing...

Changing chainring sizes is one, but if the rings are much bigger or smaller, chain length is a factor too. Even also the position of the front derailler might need to be changed.
In shifting you will hardly notice any difference I think.

if the two rings have the same bolt circle diameter they are compatible, in theory. The rub comes that some cranks and rings have little nubs that get in the way. So even though the holes line up the ring wont sit flat on the spider. Normally you can fix this with a file but it's not an A compatibly.

    Ok thanks for the info!

Just to be clear I am talking about replacing the whole crankset, the gears and cranks etc.. Just in case it sounded like I was talking about just changing out the rings.

In that case you just need to make sure the crank is compatible with your frame. Don't buy a BB30 crank for your bike that has one of those awesome threaded bottom bracket shells.
