crank/bb removal trek 3700 - sr suntour crank

My buddy has a trek 3700 that his son rides (he is eleven) and he wants to put a nicer set of cranks on the bike for his son (wants to be able to get rid of the big chain ring but the cheap crank does allow removal).

Anyone know what type of BB tool is needed to remove this set-up?

    Any assistance appreciated.

To remove the cranks you'll need a square taper type crank puller like the Park CCP-2. To change out the bottom bracket a tool like the Park BBT-22. If not replacing with a similar crank it may not be worth investing in the tools, and just have a shop do the swap. You might find another square taper crank that uses the same bottom bracket, not sure what the specs on that crank are.

Don't buy SR Suntour crank sets. They bend at the 42 when pushed hard and keep loosening crank bolt until it destroys the entire crank assembly. Go for the old Shimano Tourney(2009-2010) crank sets. These babies are strong and can do it while taking in a lot of punishment without bending. Also they are dirt cheap too.
