I'm trying to decide what to do about a crank/bb for my current build. I picked up a used Surly KM that came with a shimano square taper bb with about 500 miles on it. It feels decent, as much as I can tell from just turning the spindle by hand, and I'm cheap so I like the idea of using it. The problem is I found a killer deal on Race Face Evolve X-types ($99) and now all the used square taper cranks on ebay seem too expensive ($45 for used RF profiles). Should I go ahead and pick up some cheap shimanos (even deores are going to run $70 new) or ditch the old bb and run the new x-types? I think seeing that question in writing answered it for me, but the idea of using the free bb really appealed to the miser in me.
