Converting to a 1X system
I am looking to convert my Jamis XAM II from a Hammerschmidt to a single chain ring.
I know the Jamis has an English thread BB. Aside from that I am lost.
How difficult is it to change over ?
Simple matter of new cranks,BB and chainring?
Or need I switch out the rear derailleur?
Im doing some research and it is a bit confusing.
As the Jamis is Sram i looked at the XX1 but that is way more than i want to spend.
Yes - new cranks, BB and chainring. Technically you should get the bottom bracket shell faced, assuming you go external bearing.
You may need to look at some sort of chain retention.
Appreciate your help.

Is it not yet a popular option?
I thought I would have more to choose from.
Most of the single ring setups are for downhill.
I usually buy the Jenson SLX deal, remove the chainrings and put a single speed ring on it. You either need to add a bash guard, buy single speed chainring bolts, or shorten the supplied ones. You can sell the original rings or keep them for another bike.
Merlin has the Truvativ AKA chainsets on sale - I just put a 180mm converted to single ring on one of my bikes. Waiting for things to dry up so I can try it.
