I had the following:
Front derailleur: SHIMANO DEORE FD-M510, Top Swing
Front shifter: SHIMANO Alivio SL-M410 Mega 8 Speed STI Rapidfire Pods
Rear Derailleur: SHIMANO DEORE SLX RDM-662SGS BLACK long cage (not rapidrise)
Rear shifter: SHIMANO Alivio SL-M410 Mega 8 Speed STI Rapidfire Pods

My front shifter broke, I bought a deore front shifter (Shimano Deore SL-M590 Left Shift Lever)

The LBS is telling me that they can't get it to shift into all three front chainrings. They're also saying that the front derailleur (the one that came with the bike) isnt' compatible with an 8 speed drivetrain (even though it worked perfectly when I got it).

Are they telling me the truth in any way, or should it be able to work?

More specs on the bike
