Changing stock Altus 7 speed RD to Deore on a Hardrock 2011

I have a Specialized Hardrock 2011. Yesterday, while doing a bit of cross country the RD hanger snapped and I managed to wreck the 7-speed Altus RD. Should I just replace with another Altus or would it be possible to replace it with something a bit tougher like the Deore. I don't really want to replace any other parts and if it makes more sense to stick with the Altus in that case I don't have a problem with that, but I always like the idea of replacing broken components with better quality components where possible.

I was looking at the Shimano Deore Shadow RD-M592-SGS, price doesn't seem too crazy. Would that be a straight swap or would I need to change other parts to get it to work? Any other suggestion, any pearls of wisdom gratefully received.

The Deore will work fine, it's a 9 speed, but the pull ratio is the same across 7-9 speed, unlike 10-speed which is not compatible. I have a few of the RD-M592 derailleurs, they work real well. You may have to cut you housing a bit since the cable no longer uses a loop. Also, the Shimano removed the barrel adjuster on the derailleur, as long as you have one by the shifter, you should be all good to go.

Thanks. I will check if the shifter has a cable adjustment.
