    Chain vibration - compatibility issue?

Just finished up refurbing an ealry 90s Giant. It had a 3x7 with grip shift and Shimano sis derailleurs. I put a new 7spd freewheel on and a newer Shimano mountain crank on it that came off a 3x8.

When I put power down, the drivetrain vibrates. The derailleurs are adjusted properly. I'm wondering, is the old 7spd chain not mixing with the 8spd cranks?

Also, is there a difference in front derailleur pull between grip shift and trigger shift? The new trigger shifters shift up across the entire crankset in one shift. Derailleur is the original bottom pull.

EDIT: solved the vibration with a new chain. still tracking down the derailleur issue.

It sounds like mismatched component wear, new sprockets used with an old chain can cause the vibration you're feeling.
The trigger shifter should be compatible with your derailleur, try loosening the cable tension.

When setting up the front derailleur the chain should be on the middle ring and the shifter should be in the middle position. Then work on adjusting each direction.

My chain would start vibrating under power and I would lube it and it was fine again for another few rides. Are you sure it doesn't just need some lube?

It could, check the jockey wheels on the rear d, bottom one might need lube or be worn. Usually that can vibrate as the chain is dry and repositions as it comes around the worn teeth.. can replicate it just turning cranks by hand, if it's a dry chain/old jockey you'll feel the cage vibrate

An Ig cogset will do that with an HG chain.

    thanks for the tips guys.

as it turns out, the original chain was stretched and not mating with the new drivetrain. the rest of the bike was in such good shape i couldnt imagine it having that many miles on it. just goes to show, assumption rarely pans out!
