    Chain keeps breaking

I removed my big ring to go 2x and removed some links to accommodate the 32-tooth ring. Then I put a 36 on in its place and added some links back.

Now the chain has broken twice close to the master link where I removed and replaced links -- the pins are just not there anymore.

The chain is a KMC X10sl.

I gather that the chain is weakened by removing and reinserting pins.

I made sure the pin is centered between the plates -- a slight bit sticking out each side.

What can I do? Put it on an anvil and give it a whack with a hammer to mushroom the pins slightly?

The chain has 1200 mi but still only about .25% wear. I hate to buy a new one.

    TIA

Use replaceable master links, the KMC MissingLinks.

Ok, thanks -- will do. I have one extra and have a 6-pack on order.

you can't reinstall pins in modern chains.. the pins are slightly mushroomed (highly mushroomed on KMC chains) and when pushing out it stretches the opening in the plates, it'll never hold after that.. you can try a shimano pin on shimano chains but they just never seem to hold well for me.

like Slash5 said, just use a quick link. It's plenty strong enough.
Going to try and bring Trail Tire TV back. go take a look... http://trailtiretv.blogspot.com/

    Thanks, I didn't know that!

The first break happened when I was just pedaling gently down a slight decline on pavement when riding with Wife. But it held up fine during a race I did at the 1996 Olympic site in Georgia -- quite hilly! Don't figure. Anyway, I'm not complaining!
