    Chain Install

I am upgrading from 8 Spd to 9Spd. I have the 9spd chain but do i make it the same length as the 8spd or should it be a link longer or what?

    Re: Chain Install

Difference btwn 8 and 9 is width btwn sprockets. If cassette is same small/large sprockets, length is the same.

Number of cogs in the cassette in no way affects chain length.

If your big cog and your big chainring are the same tooth counts on your new 9 speed stuff as they were on your old 8 speed stuff, then chain length is exactly the same (assuming it was correct in the first place). If you've changed your gearing ratios along with the number of cogs in the cassette, you may need a new chain length.
