    Cassette Lockrings Are Overrated...

I rode 30 miles yesterday without a lockring on my cassette. No issues whatsoever, besides the annoying rattling of the lockring bouncing around on the axel. I was worried when it popped off. I thought the cogs might slide apart a bit (all loose cogs in the cassette) but that didnt happen. Shifting was spot on.

So what good are the lockrings?
...asked tongue in cheek of course

    More info

I must have had it on too tight after my last cassette instalation.
The steel lockring pulled all the threads out of my alloy freehub body mid-ride. Now the freehub is a not so good paperweight.
    I'm kinda miffed about that.

Be careful, you might start a new "weight weenie" trend.

Most of the time we're seeing threads on people upset that their steel cogs are digging into their alloy freehub bodies....first thread I can think of where that saved a ride!
