    cassete-frame compatability

hey all, i just got an old trek 3700 frame (probably 7 spd originally) and I want to upgrade the gearing without adding one of those stupid megarange shimano cogs. Can you put 8, 9, or 10 speed cassetes on a frame intended for 7 speed use? OR... have i just revealed that i know close to zip about building bikes and that the frame has nothing to do with the cassete size?

the 3700 is spaced 135mm at the rear drop-outs so a standard rear hub that works with 8, 9, and 10 speed cassettes will fit.
