    Cassete Compatibility

I did a quick skim through the forum and didn't find an answer to my question, so here it is. Will a SRAM 7 speed PG-730 Cassette fit on a Shimano Deore M530 rear hub? I just find it hard to believe that they make a 7 speed cassette and don't sell a new hub that it works on. Just hoping that someone can shed some light on this situation. Thanks

They may make a 7 speed cassette for whatever application (my guess is they exist for some low end commuter/hybird application), but 7 speed has not been current for something like 15 years. 7 speed cassette spacing requires a 7 speed shifter, and is narrower than any current freehub by about 5mm. You could use spacers to take up the excess space....

So does that mean a 8 or 9 speed hub will still fit on a bike originally with a 7 speed? Are the overall dimensions the same?

An older frame (pre 1994) will have 130mm hub spacing. New 8/9/10 MTB hubs are 135mm spaced. You can generally squeeze a newer hub into the spacing (stays have enough flex).

Bikes since 1994, even if they came 7 speed still used 135mm spacing so its not a big deal. You just need to use a 5mm spacer behind the cassette to take up the extra space.
