Can you use a xt crankset m770 10 speed crank with a 9 speed set up in the rear

Can you use a 10 speed crank up front with a 9 speed in the rear?

Yeah, I'd like to know too!
Seems like I can get a 10 sp XT crank cheaper than the 9 sp. XT set!

I just installed a new xt-m770 crankset and am running with an 8 speed cassette - works great, no funky adjustments issues after installing, etc.

What XT 770 crank was yours?
Price Point lists BOTH the 10sp and 9sp as XT 770.
But I guess your point would be a 9sp crank can work
    with a 8 sp rear...so a 10sp crank can work with a 9 sp rear?
    Any info out there peeps!

What front & rear deraileurs & front & rear shifters are you using with those?

But a 9 spd chain would be needed, correct?

I believe u would still use a nine speed chain. U would only use ten speed if u use a ten speed cog in back.

I just picked up a 10 speed triple XT crank (dyna-sys). My setup is currently 100% 9 speed SRAM and wanted to know if I can put this crank on w/o changing anything else. The chainring says HG-X chain only, which is a 10 speed asymmetric chain.
