Can I put the small ring (22) from an M542 Crankset onto a Deore XT M781 crankset?

    Title says it all.

Bike currently has an M542 crankset with 22-34-44 gearing.

    Deore XT T781 has 24-32-44.

I'll try running it with the 24, but I'd like to have the option of installing the 22 if it gets ugly.

    Thanks,
    Bob

    It's probably fine.

Shimano puts a lot more engineering into the faces of their chain rings. I had a problem trying to install an LX ring on an Alivio crank a while ago because of this. I doubt that this will effect you, but if you do decide to change, make sure everything fits together well before you torque the bolts.
