Can Brake cables used for gear?

I stock a bunch of good quality coated brake cables, after ungrading to hydralic brakes they are collecting dust in tool box. Has anyone use them for gear cable? I know the diameter is slightly different, just wondering if they can be used for gear housing?

    Yup....

the cable ends for brake cables are a totaly different shape than the ends on derailleur cables. They aren't compatable. That and the diameter of the cable itself is larger than derailleur cable. It would make for really poor draggy shifting if you could even get through the housing.
