Can 9 speed components be used with a 8 speed drive line?

Are 9 speed cranks and derailleurís compatible with an 8 speed chain/drive line? I would like replace my Shimano 8 speed FC-M36108 crank set with 48-38-28 teeth and RD-M340 Acera rear derailleur with Shimano Deores, which are designed for 9 speed chains.

You going to use the same shimano shifter? If so it should work.

Yes, the only real problem is trying to use a 8 speed shifter with a 9 speed cassette (or 9 speed shifter with 8 speed cassette) or using a 7/8 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette. The space between the sprockets is smaller on a 9 speed cassette, so the indexing of the 8 speed shifter over-shift in both directions. Chainsets and derailleurs may be 'optimised' (apparently) for 9 speed, but they'll function just fine with a 7/8speed chain.

What use is a philosopher who doesn't hurt anybody's feelings? -
