I am looking at replacing my current rear cog with an XTR on my 29er hardtail. I am wondering if there is a combo that is better than another for 29ers. thanks.
It depends on where you live, how you ride and front rings.
I run a 11-34 with 26/36 rings....it's hilly here.
If you live in a flat area....you'd want/need something different

I might get blasted for this, but IMO, XTR is silly for a cogset... unless you are racing at a high level, or if you are the kind of guy who blows $200 on lunch on a regular basis.
$230 for a one season, maybe two, at best three... wear out part. How much does that come to a ride? $3-5-10? All to save you 60 grams off of an XT cassette that goes for 1/3 the price.
Like I said, If $230 is parking meter change to you, go for it. To me, I'd rather blow the money on good tires.
To answer your question, I would suggest a 11-34t cassette, but that's me. I live near a lot of long steep climbs, and I'm not the lightest mammal in the jungle.
Yup....I have 2 Xtr's on race wheels and 3 Xt's on my everything else wheels...they do the same thing, and the biggest weight weenie in the world ( or on this forum) could tell the difference except on a scale.
It is a big buck pay out for a very small weight savings

The one advantage that an XTR cassette has over all others is that it is available in 12-34, and not 11-34.
