Bad idea to change a chain w/o cassette?

    Hi all,
Is it really a bad idea to change my Sram chain without changing the cassette at the same time? I was told that my chain has stretched after 4 months of abuse and that I need to change the chain for smoother shifting. What do you think?

If the chain's wear is not much above 1/16th of an inch over 12" you'll be ok to just change the chain. At 1/8" you will have to change the cassette too. It's all in my Chains info.

IMO try to get as many chains on your sprockets as you can...

look & the smallest sprocket, if your teeth are all 'hooked' looking it may well 'skip' with a new chain... but may be OK after 4 months...

put it on anyway... if it skips (big load) in the first sprocket only it may wear in... if it skips in more than one, most likely won't wear in & you will need a new cluster as well... worth a try for sure...

buy the best chain you can afford...no use wrecking a good cluster with cheap chains I say...
