Aaron Gwin's short cage xtr m985 shadow mech

looks like a saint ss cage has been swapped in. the techdoc exploded diagram would suggest that the cage fitting is slightly different...

anyone nay further thoughts on this? id kind of like to run a 1x10 speed set up with this mech to minimise chain bounce....

    http://www.sicklines.com/2009/06/30/...ge-derailleur/

after poking aroudn a little seems its been done witht he M972 derailleur,

    http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830721668.pdf

but again, the pivot between the upper cage and the body of the mech seems to be a little different than on the xtr Shadow trail mech...which has the all important stabilisation switch.

    drjon,

Are you interested in the short cage or the "plus" part of the xtr 985 rd?

I primarily like the "plus" part to reduce chain slap but the short cage would be good for 1X10's.

Anybody got a time line on these bad boys? (xtr 985 plus rd)

both. ive always preferred short cages as i ride in a lot oh heather and brush. the less cage there is the better. i also like the saint derailleur a lot: robust, strong spring, impact plate. snappy shifting too....but with xtr new shift geom, if i want to use 10 speed dyna sis, an ispec shift mount and a 1x10, a hybrid derailleur may be the only way to hit all those points....

I just tried to do it and yes you right the saint cage fits different than M985 does, also tension spring is wider than the previous XTR der. I was decided to drill 2 lil holes in the cage to fit the spring in it when I realized i won't be able to fit the lil cage stop bolt, because the circumference of the cover won't let me. any idea?

    hello!...interesting!

there was a video (linked via my blog) about gwin's bike at champerey - Monkey was alluding to the proto shimano parts (also brakes), and although the machined sections of the rear mech were different again, it had the clutch mechanism and a short cage - so i am assuming it is all proto saint stuff....either way it should be available 2012 im guessing?

not the same cage that is shown in this post, that is indeed a Saint (regular cage), which tells me that can be done!

Finally I got everything together and the xtr/saint 10sp mech works flawlessly! few things here and there needs to be done but not complicated tasks involved.

If you need any advise to do this, please give me a shout over here.
