Should be fine, but I have not tried it that way round - I ran a 10 speed 105 triple with 9 speed chain and 9 speed XT rear set up for a while on my hybrid after the 7 speed stock crap wore out. the front shifting was smooth as, did about 8000Km like that.
Only reason I changed the rear out to 10 speed and flatbar shifters was because my wife's, stock drivetrain wore out so I put the 9 speed stuff on her bike and got her a second hand crankset and bb.
Yup, i think it will work.. I've been using 8sp chain on 9sp crank and there's no problem with it..
