9 speed shifter and 8 speed cassette?

I am guessing that I can get this to work. Looking threw my old parts I found a number of 8 speed cassetts that I could use on a bike. I have a 9 speed shifter to use with 9 speed front chainrings. I can use a 8 speed chain on the 9 speed chainrings I think but can I adjust the der to use with the 8 chain and cassette? thanks

No - it's the shifter and cassette that have to be a match, as the indexing on the shifter throws the rear der. a certain amount, that corresponds with a cog space / increment. The spacing for 9 speed cogs/cassettes is different than 8 speed cogs/cassettes - so it will not work.

Assuming your asking about a 9-spd shifter and an 8-speed cassette.... which is not entirely clear from your post.

you can make it work 9spd on the front and 8spd right handed shifter w/ 8spd rear casette and 9spd derailleur, but shifting on the front rings wont be optimum. you might encounter chainsuck &/or noise.
