9 Speed Cogs on 8 Speed Cassette

Yesterday my 8 speed cassette and rear derailleur had an accidental meeting and both are wrecked. Can I take the cogs from a new 9 speed Deore cassette and install those with the 8 speed spacers on my bike?

Probably, but why not just buy a new 8 speed cassette, they're dirt cheap (~$20 for PC-830's at Nashbar) and will give you the full range of the cassette and is guaranteed to work

I found a SRAM 850 8 speed for $25 at my LBS. I can get a Deore 9 speed for $30. I live in Canada so the shipping from Nashbar is a killer.

Maybe I will stick with the 850. Its cheap enough.
