    9 Spd cassette spacer?

I changed from 8 to 9 spd last season and today I noticed that there is spacer on the freehub just before the 34T cog. I it necesary with a 9spd cassette? I really don't have any shifting
problems. But it seems that my chain runs really close to my dropouts when I'm running
    on the 11T cog.

    The spacer is there because....

it was probably there with the 8speed cassette as well. Running close to the drop outs isn't a big thing. Most bikes are like this. If the chain ain't hitting the drop out leave it alone! Like dan0 said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!!! Removing that spacer would probably cause you more problems than you could shake a spoke at. So leave it be.

In answer to your question, yes it's probably necessary or it wouldn't be there!
