8 speed chain, cassette with 9 speed shifter derailleur?

Iím thinking of building a 8x1 set up but would like to use my 9 speed xtr rear derailleur and xt 9 sp shifters? Iív read that you can set the limit screws on the derailleur to work with an 8 sp cassette, but can you still use a 9 speed shifter, or will that drop the chain??
    Thanks

You should be able to just set the limit screw to prevent it from dropping it off.

The road bike I purchased had 9 speed shifters installed on a 7 speed drivetrain, and the limit prevented it from shifting to the last 2 (nonexistant) cogs.

Shimano nine speed shifters aren't really compatable with eight speed setups -- the spacing between cassette cogs is different.

There is a way to rig the cable attach point on the rear derailleur as per Sheldon Brown:http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html
Scroll down to Alternate Cable Routing.

    I think I'll just stick with 1x9 till I get a 8 sp shifter
