I'm fixing up another bike out of spare parts. This time I was gonna try a 1x7, using an old Suntour drivetrain I had lying around and ditching the front derailleur.
I was thinking about trying a new 180mm SS crankset but I was wondering if chainrings that were probably designed in this modern 8- and 9-speed era (Truvativ Stylo, for instance) will likely have a chainring that won't gear-up well with a 7-speed rear? And what if I'm running a 7-speed chain?
I've read that 8-speed chainrings don't "officially" work with 9-speed cassettes, but you can usually get away with it. Is the same true for 8- or 9-speed chainrings and 7-speed cassettes? Is it a question of chain spacing and width er somethin'?
Pretty green questions, but go ahead and assume I'm a 12-year old when answering!
