    3x9 to 2x10 Crank swap

My old XT 3x9 crank needs to be replaced. So I am considering getting a SLX or XT 2X10 crankset. I don't want to go for a full 10sp drivetran due to $$$ and few other reasons. Will the 2x10 work well with a 9sp chain and FD? If not, I'll just go with a 3x9 crank.

I do realize I will have to readjust the FD. Will I have to raise or lower the FD as well?

    Thanks for any input.

I'm running a 3x10 front that I removed a chainring off of for a bash with the original xt 3x9 front der and a 9sp chain with 0 issues.

Going to be doing the same in the upcoming weeks.

Front deraileur position will be more dependent on chainring - so just high enough to clear the big ring. Then tune in the high low screws to avoid drops from overshooting shifts.

The chain may be an issue. I think the wider 9spd chain may catch on the 2x cranks, so budget for a 10spd chain - just in case.
PM me for a great price on a pike 150 27.5 as new condition, barely seen dirt!

10sp chainrings have same width as 9sp chainrings

10sp cranks have same spacing between rings as 9sp cranksets

So, you shouldn't have an issue running a 10sp crankset with an otherwise 9sp system.

If you are going to keep your 3x9 FD and run it with the new 2x10 cranks, don't lower it, just leave it where it was and wind in the 'H' screw so you can't accidentally shift into your (now) non-existent big ring. Yes it'll look ugly sticking up there, but if that bothers you get a 2x specific FD which has a smaller cage.
