    3x10 to 1x10 question

I have a set of Shimano M552 3x10 cranks. I am looking to swap to a 1x10 set up but retain my cranks. I found a 30T, 104 BCD, 4 bolt hole chain ring. Is it as easy as swapping out the chain rings, removing the derailleur and calling it a day? Or is there more to it? If I swap that out will I be able to shift to all the gears out back without a problem? My middle ring is a 32T right now, so I am very close in size.

thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

Yep it's that easy. Take off your shifter, front der, and extra rings.

Here is the big thing. Get a wolftooth chainring. It will good the chain on the ring. Also you will need bmx chain ring bolts .

    Aside from that have fun.

Yep, get a single speed front ring, remove the unused parts. Unless you run a bash guard you will need shorter chain ring bolts. Or shorten the nuts on your present bolts. I use a belt sander.
Having said that, you may have chain retention issues. The single speed ring might be enough but might not.

If I decide to run the setup as a 2x10 do I just tune my derailleur so it refuses to shift into the highest gear? Or do I have to buy those specifically for a 2x10?

Just adjust the front derailleur limit screws so it only shifts to the middle ring.

You might want to take a few links of your chain too

How many links do you usually remove per tooth dropped?

You have to break the chain in any case. Just resize it by the usual method.

If you want to run it w/o a chainguide, you will need a clutch-type rear derailleur and one of the new chainrings with teeth that help retain the chain. The rear derailleur should preferably be of the short cage variety.
