    2x9 with Trim?

Has anybody had success setting up a 2x9 to work with all 3 front derailleur stops? I'd like to go 2x9, but if I do, I need to be able to use my whole cassette while in the middle ring. I've never had much luck getting the front der setup to do this without rubbing at one of the extremes. Could I just dial down the top limit screw and tension to give me this shifting pattern in the front - similar to trim adjustments on road triples?

1 - small ring (optimize for no rub on large cogs)
2 - low middle ring (ie. no rub on large cogs)
3 - high middle ring (ie. no rub on small cogs)

I run 2x9 setups on 2 of my bikes with no rubbing. Gripshifts allow you to trim the front derailleur as you describe. I don't think the same can be done with triggers.

    GripShift, Thumbshifter, Or Original Rapidfire

Those are pretty much your only options for non-indexed front shifting.

Have you tried changing your chainline? That would be easier.
