2x9 Cross-Chain Problem
Hopefully someone has advice.
I switched my crank from 3x9 to 2x9. Iím used to riding mostly in the middle ring on the 3x9 and the drivetrain was quiet.
Now, with the 2x9, thereís a lot of cross-chaining noise. Obviously, I can shift the front gears to align the chain, but I find myself shifting the front way too often. Itís just a PITA.
Is this common, and what to do about it?

Re: 2x9 Cross-Chain Problem
This is a common problem. Did you lower your front derailleur? The cage of your FD is made for triple rings, so the form of the cage is sculpted for the different chain positions. You want to use the chain on different positions, thus the chain rubs the cage.
Also many FD cages or pretty long, not suitable for the chain in the extreme positions..
Suggestion: position your FD height correctly, forget the standard rule of thumb of having 3mm above the big ring.
If you cannot get it rub free you might need a shorter cage derailleur
Thanks for the tip.
It's a SRAM XO direct mount, so there's no up/down adjustment possible. So, you're saying try a proper, 2 ring derailleur?
That's How I Roll, part of the problem is the chainline of your new 2 x cranks. The big ring is mounted further outward than the middle of your old three ring set up. You are going to suffer more noise in the lower gears of the cassette as a result, although the granny gear chainline should be improved
OK thanks. Looks like I'll have to play with the BB spacers.
