2X9 conversion on LX octagon crankset questions

I have read the threads about coverting to 2X9 and thought that it was a straightforward process. If that is the case please excuse the dumb questions .

I thought that it's possible to remove the middle ring and replace it with the outer ring. I have tried every combination possible and it will not fit unless I remove some metal inboard of the bolt holes on the chainring.

I plan to ride my bike mainly on the pavement. Given that I wish to use a 42T chainring in the middle position, what is the largest size inner ring that is practical and where can I buy it? I realise that the size is likely to be limited by chainstay clearance.

It would appear that a 28 or 29 X 42 combination will work.

i think you have to keep the big ring on the outside if you dont want to do any modding. id look at some of the sram 2 ring cranksets to see what chainring sizes they use.
