I just purchased a new Pivot Mach 5.7 that I got a great deal on. It came with a 2x10 X9 drivetrain with a 26/39 X9 crankset. The 2x10 is great, but I've found with my knee problems I really miss my granny gear and just can't push the harder gear up some of these super steep climbs in Colorado. So I'm going to throw a 3x10 crank on and replace the outer with a bash, then sell my 2x10 crankset. The Pivot uses an E-Type or S3 direct mount front derailleur so I did purchase a new X9 S3 top pull to use because the current one won't work. You can't really change the derailleur height on Pivot's setup.
My plan is to use the existing 2x10 shifter on the 3x10 crank since I'll be using a bash and won't use the big ring. Problem is I keep hearing that I'll need a new shifter too because the cable pull is different. I'm not seeing why. The throw is only 13 teeth on a 2x10. The difference is 11 teeth between small and middle on a 3x10. With careful aligning of the limit screws on the front derailleur and proper setup, I don't get why it won't work. That's what everyone keeps telling me though. Is the 10 speed stuff really that picky or is this just to try and get me to spend more money? I'm already buying a new front derailleur and crank. I just don't get why I need a new shifter too. I'm OK is shifting up front isn't completely smooth and flawless, as long as it works well. Thanks!
