I'm a pretty strong climber and there is a climb near me that I can't clean on a 29/40. I can clean the same climb on the same bike with a 24/32/42 triple, so I would go as low as you can if I were you. I find a 40 to be more usable on the trail than a 42. I can use it more often, and it's less likely to hit a rock. I would only do the 42 if you do a lot of pavement/fireroad.

It's a compromise between top speed and lower gear while climbing.
In figures: in top speed you gain about 1.2 mph comparing 40T and 42T, on the bottom end the difference will be no more than 0.36 mph (28 slower than 30).

If you do a lot of flat riding, I'd say go for the 42/30 and get stronger so you'll be able to climb those steep hills with 30/36
