20T ring on XT M770 crankset clearance?
I would like to put a 20T ring on my XT M770 3x9 crankset with a 10 speed chain. Anyone out there that have done this? I'm afraid that the chain will rub on the posts that the ring attaches to, because the chain comes pretty close to the posts with the stock 22T ring.
Thanks,
Shawn

You need four 2mm metal spacers.....done!

Do you climb some extremely steep terrain? Why drop down to a 20 tooth?
What size is your cassette?
Sent from the communicator that I stole from Captain Kirk

No shifting problems? Or rubbing problems in the front derailer?

Yeah, around here everything is either up or down. Cassette is 11-34, 9 speed. I really don't want to increase my weight by putting on a 36T and losing my 11T on my cassette.

Zero. The spacers makes it work flawlessly.

I used a 20t on a 3 ring xtr 970 crankset. Got it from www.mountain-goat.de

What about the chainring bolts? I might try this, but I doubt it will work.
This is a good thread for how to do it: 20x36 options - Mtbr Forums
4crawler was right in the above thread, you have to grind a lot off. 10 speed or 9 shouldn't matter, but for some reason I got the action tec to work easier than the ebay ring.

The 20t front and 34t rear combo works great, for the steepest climbs. So what if you can hike it on foot faster? The fact I don't have to put a foot down and keep pedaling, makes it all worth it!

^ yeah, there is a pride factor involved. I'm not a good climber, and I don't really even enjoy it. I don't care how slow I am, as long as I don't have to get off.
