20t Doval Oval Chainring install pics

Got the ring in the other day so went ahead with the install. I'm replacing the 22t off my SRAM X7 175m crankset with GXP BB..as mc out of curiosity as anything. I've read so many conflicting reports on ovals, but it was a $15 ring with $10 to ship from Korea, so what the hell. It came with an odd-looking adapter that's apparently meant for a 3 to 2 conversion and 4 spacers. I didn't use either as there were none for my 22t and they're the same width. Only thing is that at the very least you'll need to file the edges of the ring bolts so that the chain rides well. I may need to go back and file on the actual mounts for the ring as some others have reported having to do, we'll see. I hope to ride it later or in the morning. Good way to know precisely where on the bolts to file is to first snug them up and mark the arc with a marker. Be sure to use blue Loctite..and check ALL your other chainring bolts..found one of mine on the 32t ring was not at all snug..anyway. So, here's Doval's sheet, parts and my install. Torqued cranks to 54 newton-meters per SRAM specs. Just made chainring bolts good and tight..they didn't include torque values.

The 20t ring is gonna make you use it a lot...especially if there are many steep hills. I found I can walk the bike faster dismounted.....but what fun is that? Keep that puppy clean...a 20t ring is very chainsuck-happy.

Let us know how it goes. I'm also waiting on my Doval 25t granny. How long did it take to get yours?

hey, it took 2 weeks from korea...ordered on 10/11 got it on 10/26. not bad..I've had Taiwan things take anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 weeks pretty consistently.

wow, yup it climbs like a goat. but it's pretty subjective because it climbed like one with the 22/36 combo as well. I've gone from 18 to 16 gear-inches, so I know mathematically it's an easier climb. hard to maintain a line as always of course at below walking speeds. made more difficulty with my 38 lb daughter for part of the ride in her ibert/front seat I did have a cpl bad shifts from the 20 to the 32 but I figured out that that was due to my not giving the shifter a more solid press..i just so rarely make those shifts I figure lol. going from the 32 to the 20 did fine every time. and once I remembered to make a more 'positive upshift' all was normal. a couple times on some initial climbs I felt what was like a chain slip, similar to what I was getting on a worn 11t cog I used to run in the rear. I'm guessing it came from the 20t as I was in it..may be that I will actually need to grind on the corresponding mounts. I need more miles to know for sure. no biggie if I do..was just in a rush to get a test rolling tonight. you know how it is..

I look forward to them. I used to have a 20t granny when the largest rear cog was 32t, but that was 5 bolt.
I got some bad ideas in my head.
