20t Action Tec chainring.
I'm considering changing my 22T chainring to a 20T Ti Action Tec chainring on my XT 3x9 external BB crankset. I can use the extra power up the steep climbs. I was considering changing my 34T out back to a 36T. But, I would have to take the 11T off and get a new lock ring for the 13T. Plus it's going to add some weight. With the 22T chainring, I get even more climbing power and a little reduction in weight.
Any reason this would be a bad idea?

I tried one for a minute, it was fine.
It was on an XT crank.
I still have it if you're interested.

Tell me the 411. How did you come to use one for a minute? Are you the original owner? What shape is it in? Did you like it? Is it 64mm bolt circle? Do you know of it a ELS Heatreated Titanium Ring or one of the less expensive Ringleader Titanium Ring? Any chance of getting a picture?
Thanks,
Shawn

I have an ActionTec 11-gram, Titanium 20t granny and it gives me the oomph to tackle some steep-ass hills! With it - my 23 pound Giant Anthem X2 suddenly becomes a go-anywhere, do-it-all Trail bike. The feeling of confidence to mash up a 22% steep rock grade never felt better.
If you want one....gimme a holler.

I have a 21T on my XTR crank for my hardtail. I used it two years ago for Leadville. I felt like I got a lift from just one tooth difference. I'll use it again in 2014 if I am fortunate to get in.

Amazing what a few teeth difference can make, to your ride. I actually started LOOKING for stuff to clear, after installing my 21-tooth ring. After that, I went 20-tooth and my bike suddenly became a go-anywhere, do-it all machine.
Shawn, you'll have your "climbing legs" by this Wednesday!

bt in this thread has one for sale. You just have to make sure the chain doesn't rub on the posts the ring attaches to. I'm going to use Zach's 2mm spacers that are coming with the ring. There is another tread in this section for more info.

Just measure from the middle of one small ring bolt to the next bolt. XT is 64mm.
