    2 speed

I havw a Raleigh xxix (SS 29er), I Live in Reno Very Hilly, the stock 32:20 is great for going up, but SLOW in the flats and useless downhill, Im thinking about a 2 speed manual switch rear with a tensioner

    2 x 2

i set up a two speed bike as a commuter. my frame is an SS with horizontal dropouts. i put on two chainrings, two cogs on my freewheel, spaced so that both have perfect chainline. one chain. the trick is to have the same number of teeth, so i ride 42x16 while cruising, 36x22 while climbing. note that these are with a 26" wheel. 30 second change of gears by loosening back wheel (quick release with a surly tug on the drive side) and manually moving the chain inboard or outboard.
