    2 DUMB Questions

I think my rear derailer is bent. It's a sram x4 and I was thinking of upgrading it to a x7. Will I need to change the shifter also?

I want to change to 2x front but I'm run 8 speed rear. Will I still have enough gears to pull my climbs?

A 9 speed X.7 will work with your existing shifters. The second question is really dependent on what gears you run up front and how strong a rider you are. Plenty of people ride 2 x 8 with no issues.

If you run 2 up front in the same fashion as most people, you will simply lose the big ring. It will not affect your climbing because you'll still have granny. I went 2 up front for awhile. It's easy to do; just replace the big ring with a bashguard and set the limit screw so you can't shift onto the bash.

Are your X4 shifters 8 or 9 speed?

The shifters are 8 speed but the specs I saw on the x7 said it was 8 or 9speed.

As for the 2x up front I never get into the big ring unless I'm on a road ride.

It doesn't matter (though it seems obvious since you were asking about 2 x 8 that they are 8 speed)

Just don't get the new 10 speed X.7, the 9 speed version will work with the 8 speed X4 shifters no problem.

Yeah, go with what mtnbiker72 says. The 9 speed should work fine.

And yes, I rarely use my big ring. Only when I get to a long descent or a smooth flat.

mtnbiker72 let me ask this. What do I need to look at to see if I have the extra room to upgrade to a 9 speed?

8 and 9 speed cassettes use the same width freehub body. So with a 9 speed chain, shifter, and cassette you can upgrade. The 9 speed chain will work fine on your 8 speed crankset and front derailleur.
