1x8 or 9 or 10 parts list help please

Hi I have a Karate Monkey thet i bought used setup as a single speed. I really like it in the trails but would like to try gears mainly for road rides (and it would nice not to spin out in the trails). I currently ride 32x20 in the woods and 32x17 around town. My rear wheel is a standard cassette type which currently has 2 singlespeed cogs and a bunch of spacers.

    questions

What would be an inexpensive casette, rear derailleur, shifter, cable, and chain combo? My understanding is I can get a short cage as i am only using 1 front chainring.

The 10 spped clutch type sounds great for in the future but I want to keep this cheap as I am unsure if I will like the switch from the trouble free singlespeed setup. If I fall in love with gears I would move the cheap setup over to my loaner bike in the future and get better drivetrain components for the Monkey. (both bikes have derailleur hangers built in to the frames)

If someone is willing to spend the time to put together a shopping list they get 100 cool points for the day.

Shifter and chain will work fine, don't forget cable housing.

The shifter usually include the necessary cable and housing. When I bought a pair of Deore XT shifter, it included both cables and enough housing for both.

Not OE parts. You may get a cable but it's best to expect nothing and order what you need, including ferrules.

That's true. Mine was a retail package.

This totals me up to 160. Is it worth looking at anything cheaper?

SLX derailleur would save $20 and you probably couldn't tell the difference in a blind test (don't try blind test!). You could also save a few bucks by going with a heavier cassette.
