    1x10 options?

I'm looking at going 1x10 on my AM bike and I wanted to know what my options are.

As far as the cassette it looks like XX is my only choice and I can live with that. What I don't like are the XX RD and shifter; I am willing to over pay for one component but not three.

Aren't there light 10s short cage road derailleurís? I know they may not be as sturdy as MTB derailleurís but if the cage is really short, it will not come into contact with rocks.

    Technically speaking would this work?

As far as a 10s shifter I know there is a grip shift option but I don't think that is realistic for AM riding; do I have any other options?

    Please share your expertise...

A 9 spd. derailuer will work , just have to match up with a 10 spd. shifter .

-XX is not your only choice for cassettes, IRD makes 10 speed cassettes in up to 11-34 configurations.
-You can use a Shimano R770 shifter, it is a 10 speed rapid fire shifter
-Use a Saint SS rear derailleur for ultimate durability, it will work 10 speed

anyone else making an 11-36 option rear cassette?

Would an X.0 RD work with 10s?

There will be 11-36t ten speed cassettes from Shimano and SRAM in lower levels if you can wait for the 2011 product to come out. Currently the SRAM X.O. will not work with the XX shifters (so no 10 speed) without modification as seen on Steve Peat's World Cup V-10. Again though, X.O. will be 10 speed for 2011 if you can wait.

Shimano is coming with tons of 10s stuff for '11 so be patient and in a couple of months you'll be set.
Check out my SportTracks plugins for some training aid software.

I am willing to be patient for something that is a good deal but '11 shimano will be so overpriced for lightweight parts that I'm closing the door on that option.

Do you think there will be an XT double crankset? I want 26 or 27t and 38 or 40t up front

Though no "spy" photos have been shown, since Shimano will be offering 2 x 10 down to the SLX level...XT would get similar chainring combinations as 2011 XTR which are:
    44-30
    42-30
    40-28
    38-26

Any idea if these new cranks will use the same 104/64mm BCD as the old triple cranks? Will we finally have Shimano replacement chainrings available in a variety of sizes?

dont worry in the coming year you will have so much option from cheap to expensive to do that 1x10 conversion! only thing is you prolly cant use the 2x10 cranks converted unless u run a minimum of 39t up front.

Get a cheaper 11-25 road cassette for now and use a smaller chain ring.

    Let's see here:

    SRAM XX shifters and RD

SRAM flatbar road shifters with SRAM road RD

Shimano flatbar road shifters with Shimano road or MTB RD

Aftermarket 10s SRAM or Shimano gripshifters with appropriate RD.

Or, if you can wait until July or August, 10s X.O, or SLX, XT, and XTR.

Just read on Bikerumor about an X-7 group that will include 2x10 with a 12-36 cassette.

    No ETA for release, however.

Thanks for the info! I guess the real question is could you use a 10-speed double with a 9-speed chain, cassette, and RD?? All I want to do is add the double to my current XT 32t x 11-34 set-up..

What about the Shimano TS74-10 shifters, are they compatable with a 10s MTN rear cassette?

Any 10s shimano shifter will be compatible with any 10s shimano/sram cassette. Any 8s, 9s, or 10s shimano RD will work.

be careful with the RD, not all are compatible with 11/36 10s
my XTR shadow makes gost shifts
it's a problem of the shadow cage design

I wonder what shimano will change to make them compatible...

    my setup:
    XX 11/36
    XTR shadow RD
    KMC X10SL chain
    hammerschmidt crankset
