10 sp Shimano cassettes on 9/10 sp Shimano hubs

I need a bit of help - I've searched and searched this forum and others and read conflicting reports about whether 10 Shimano cassettes (we're talking MTB) on 9/10 speed hubs require the 1 mm spacer behind the large cog.

I always thought they did, and I've definitely used them changing a road cassette. But then I bought a new cassette this week:
The cassette had no spacer in the package and the tech docs don't reference one.

It seems to fit on snug with no play, but I've also read that is no guarantee.

Does anyone know if Shimano altered the newer cassette widths or if the 1mm spacer only applied to road and not mtb?

If I can't get the lock ring on when adding a spacer, I suppose that might be the answer? Thanks..

Road cassettes require the spacer on most hubs ( Shimano and Mavic made "10 speed only" hubs that don't require the spacer)
    MTB cassettes have no spacer
