Cambriabikes has the 06 PG990 cassette on sale for $55. It seems a good deal, but I have no idea if there were substantial changes in 07 and 08. Anyone knows what changed?

The two biggest changes....

were in gearing and the carrier spider. The 06 990 11-34 second gear was the same as with an 11-32 cassette, 28T 2nd gear, with a jump to a 34T 1st gear. It was too big of a jump. The 07 and newer 11-34 uses the same gearing as a Shimano 11-34 with a 30T 2nd gear and a more reasonable jump to the 34T 1st gear, intermediate gears were also changed to mirror the more traditional Shimano gear range. The 11-32T 990 remained the same and has always been the same as the "traditional" shimano 11-32 gearing. The second improvement was the jump to an alloy 5 arm spider from a composite spider. The alloy spider is more durable, stiffer, produces slightly more accurate shifts, and supports the larger cogs better. The 06 model is a good deal if you're going with the 11-32 cassette. You don't really notice the alloy spider unless you have to force a shift. But if you are looking at a 11-34, I'd go with the 07 or newer. The gear jumps are more logical, smoother, and feel more natural as you move through the gears. That's besides, the alloy spider is a sexy anodized red! :D
