    Vivid R2 450# coils on Glory 01

I'm going to my LBS to check out an 01 today. I heard all Glory 01s come with a 450# coil (S,M, & L). I'm 6'3" and over 200#, so I'm getting a large frame. I'm new to this and I am looking for someone to teach me how to recognize whether I actually need to negotiate for a 500# coil or or the 450# coil is right for me. I have no idea what to look/feel for.

There's a formula regarding the shock size/stroke length, wheel travel and desired sag with a given rider's weight.
Yet, there's also a few spring calculators online that make it easier, the TF tuned is probably the more common: http://www.tftunedshox.com/info/spring_calculator.aspx

Regarding your specific question with the Glory, given that the Glory uses a 9.5" shock with a 3" stroke and has 8" of travel, at 33% sag (the most common for DH applications) the 450lbs spring will suit you fine (you didn't mention if the 200lbs you weight are with riding gear, though ... it should be).

My 2010 glory 1 large came with a 500 lbs. spring. I'm 200 and have a 500 on it now and it feels good, but last season I used a 450 on it and it was good too.

So I wound up getting a 2011 Giant Glory 00 in Large. It came with a 500# spring which for me at 200# had me at the perfect sag. And if it wasn't the shop would have just swapped the spring for me, no biggie.

On another suspension spring related note. I got a 2011 Fox 40. The stock spring is for someone that is closer to 170#. With the fork being new and extra stiff I left it in, but will need to swap it out for a higher spring rate once the fork is broken in. Gonna cost me $25 at my LBS.
