OT: the Coke & Lifesavers experiment (video)

    I love the internet.
Turns out Wintergreen Lifesavers (any maybe other flavors too, I just heard about Wintergreen) activate the carbonation in soda. If you drop one in a cup of coke and wait for it to stop fizzing (10 or 20 seconds) the soda will be flat.
The better experiment was to dump a bunch of lifesavers into a bottle of Coke (Rite-Aid Diet Cola to be exact in this case). We got one of those wide mouth 3-litre bottles (party size) and a bag of giant Wintergreen Lifesavers. Check the video to see the result...

(right click me, save target as)

Background info: the bottle was room temperature and opened right before the video starts. I'm told that the Lifesavers in a regular roll are smaller and will fit into the mouth of a 2-litre. I would probably go higher since the opening is smaller.

Actually its that the bubbles can form on imperfect surfaces. Sugar, lifesavers, etc. are chock full of them. Drop in a smooth sugar candy and it won't work nearly as well.

It is the sugar combined with the uneven porous surface. Drop a bunch of Mentos in the bottle and nothing will happen.

next time, get aluminum foil, and make a bunch of little balls, about the size of marbles. make enough to cover the bottom of a gatorade bottle or somethign like that. then pour in enough of the works toilet bowl cleaner (or any other cleaner that contains hydrochloric acid) to cover the balls. then screw the top on tight, get back, wait a few minuites, and watch what happens. PS dont do it inside.

The title of the post begins with OT or 'Off Topic' for the abbreviationally challenged.
I'll happily delete the post if everyone thinks it will make this forum a better place to pass on to our children.
