how to get the right bash ring size?

I am looking at geting a bash ring for my 38t crankset. I heard that you have to get the next size up bashring (40t) othwerwise the bashring wont protect it.
    Is that true?

Bash ring sizes describe the biggest chain ring they will protect (not the size they match), so a 38t guard is bigger than a 38t chain ring and will protect it fine.

You can still fit a 40t guard if you want though, fitting a guard that's too big doesn't really have any negatives beyond slightly worse ground clearance.

depending on the make, some are plenty big enough to go a few sizes up. for example, i have an E13 36t bash that sufficiently covers my 38t chainring...
