Ok. Thanks. It seems that the suntour loyalty program will work.
I also ordered some race face cranks, a threaded bb, and a 34t chainring. Will come back in a few days with pics of an updated setup.
Has anyone switched to a tapered fork? What size (internal) Lower headset did you use? Would love to use the loyalty program but they only offer tapered forks now.
I don't think you can use a tapered fork with this bike-the straight head tube of the Recoil has a diameter of 1 1/8 inches (I think), and all of the tapered forks need a lower head tube diameter of 1.5 inches.
Im very new to MTB, how long is the stock 2014 recoil stem? How do i shop for one thats about... and inch or two longer? and is there any sites that you guys know of where I could find how to's about how to build a MTB? I would like to start modifying the bike but I have no clue where to start. Thanks.
The stem appears to be 70mm in length. Go to a local bike shop and ask if you can try some stems - they'll probably be fine with it. You can tell them what you want, and they'll recommend stuff for you. Trying it out is the only way you can be sure you'll like it.
Park Tool has some written tutorials, but they're not complete. MBR Magazine on Youtube has an expansive library of maintenance videos, as with GCN. I'm also predicting that GMBN (the mtb counterpart of GCN) will post videos in the near future on maintenance. Finally, this thread on the forum is also a good place to look when you're working on your bike.
Hey thanks for the response! I haven't gotten around to any LBS yet but will soon. That crank swap you did was something I'd be interested in too, I'm very mechanical so the actual work isnt a problem. Its when trying to buy stuff, There's alot of different numbers teeth, lenghts, mm sizes. Its overwhelming. I do want to change the fork but I'd rather a shop do that because of the specialized tooling. The bike is heavy so slowly, I'd like to change that. All while learning of course.
Most parts bought on eBay, fork was via Suntour loyalty program which was very fast and very easy. Going to put on some miles before I decide next moves or something breaks.
New fork for my 2011 Recoil, 2012 140mm Rockshox Revelation RLT Dual Air with new 15mm lowers and new 180mm Ashima Airotors up from 160mm. Weight is up some from the Axon Werx carbon fork, but I like the geometry better. Anyways I can always switch back if I get tired of the extra travel.
@Broads72. How is the 160mm front rotor ? I currently run the 180mm stock rotor with the exact same brake kit as your girlfriend. I have a 160mm rotor laying around, and want to go down a size so that the rotor is stiffer and less likely to bend.
Full Zee 10 speed set up with Raceface 32tooth NW single up front.
Didn't plan to upgrade as I bought the bike to get my girlfriend into riding. Now I can't get her off of it.
How does she like the zee? Debating that or the XT RD. Also, what BB tools did you need to get to swap over to the RF crank? Did you need a chaintool too?
I ordered RF cranks and a Zee set up that will be here this week, I'm loving riding this thing in the city and in the trails. Has anyone changed the headset yet? That's on my to do, I've raised the handlebar a spacer and it fits perfectly. Wished the stand over height was better but I love the 29" after all.

I replaced the headset so I could use a tapered fork. You can find some ways to kinda create the tool you need for it using large washers. In the end I took my frankenbike to the LBS and it needed to be tightened using the correct tool.
Just recently purchased 15 Recoil after going to couple LBS and being shown $800 bikes with ok components (all had x series suntour forks, lower end shimano components). I wasn't sure if I made the right choice but so far I love the bike. Upgraded pedals, grips, and rear shock to DNM which I thought drastically changed the feel on the trail. Waiting on suntour to get back to me for the fork upgrade, I've been riding enough that it's starting to irritate me when it clanks when I get some air and feel jolt the front end down.
I guess my style of riding is all mountain, I am not a fan of steep climbs, more in it for the steady downhill and occasionally steep drop offs. I usually keep chain middle chain ring up front which makes me want to convert to 1x10, probably do like everybody else and do race face crankset with 32t and 11-36 cassette. Is there a complete package I can buy or is this something I have to piece together? I try to ride pretty frequent at my trails, at least 3x a week and I'm starting to notice some annoyance with my current drivetrain (just recently tuned). Rear clanks hard when shifting and sometimes gets stuck when shifting all the way down the small gear. Also with 3x8 I'm worried about cross shifting (not sure if right term) and would rather eliminate that. Does cross shifting occur on 2x10 set ups?
Here's mine, 2015 recoil, just bought it a week ago. I have a hardtail DB response xe 29er that i rode the hell out of. i eventually rode mammoth bike park with it and shredded it lol. I've been wanting a fs bike and i figured if my response held up to that beating, a recoil should be able to take more lol...we shall see. so far ive got an xc32tk fork, mavic crossones, an easton havoc carbon bar and shimano hydros with 180s front and rear.
It saved a little, they aren't super high end wheels though, I bought them for the sealed cartridge bearing set up over the stock wheelset ball bearings I had to keep adjusting. They're pretty solid wheels though, I've got no complaints. The fork and carbon bars saved the most, next is upgrading the rear shock as soon as I find a sweet deal...
Here she is w the 1x in Boston, I actually like it, it looks sleeker and less maintenance to deal with. I do wish i could index my gears a bit better though, its not as crisp as I'd like. I want to get wheels and go tubeless next but I'll be moving to FL soon, might sell this and get a HT idk yet.
Edit: When I was doing the drivetrain swap, The frame and fork was really light, I forget by how much but the wheels plus rotor and what not prob weighed the same if not heavier than the frame and fork when i had them separated. I think it weighs 33lbs ish now

great shot of bike and Boston. drove there from Wisconsin in summer and had to bike the river walk. sadly missed out on some great trail riding though.
