I'm looking into getting a cheap mountain bike and ran accross this bike for $280. I'm sure I can talk the guy down to at least $240
Is this a good deal or should I pass?
I'm more of a road bike user, but friends want to start doing mountain biking. Mind you, we are no experts.
For $250ish it isn't terrible, but know that it is a very entry level bike. Biggest drawback is the Suntour XCT fork, which is really designed more for off-pavement (ie gravel) than off-road riding. That said, not a bad way to get started, just keep to trails where the front wheel is staying on the ground, and if you want to start hitting the bigger things plan on a fork upgrade in a season or 2.
If it were me, I might hunt a bit more for a bike that has a XCM or XCR fork, or maybe the rockshox xc28. Still entry level, but a bit more capable before jumping to the next tier of cost.
Thanks for your response.
Yeah, it's to start off. I'm more of a road biker.
I saw this for $250OBO. Is this better instead? https://img.localbiketrader.com/bikes/data/photos/13294_1.jpg
mechanical disc brakes, 24 speeds (8 X3) and Shimano components.26" wheels and brand new rear tire.
so, if anything, worse. Go with the original DB, it is fine until you know what you want in a MTB. Then your budget jumps 4-5 fold.
